G/Ginota Dhamapala Vidyalaya School

This school has 60 enrolled students, aged between 5 and 16 years.

It was the first time that we had visited this very poor and extremely run down school. Over half the children do not have parents and live with grandparents or other relatives. The new headmaster, originally from Thelikida school seems very committed and clearly wanted to improve the whole school.

Although the school was in such poor repair, when asked what they needed help with, the headmaster desperately wanted to increase the height of the front school wall and gates. Usually this kind of request would be very low priority, however, sadly the reason for this request is as the children have no parents and are very poor, they are easily enticed over the low school wall by people offering food and cigarettes. This is a truly horrific story, so we agreed to build the wall and gates immediately, the work starting the next day.

Approximately 40 metres of wall and the gate were increased in height by 2 feet, the toilets repaired, tree branches cut down and are currently repairing the boys urinals.

The headmaster also wanted to paint the new wall to make the school look more inviting and we also suggested that the whole school be painted at the same time. This would cost in the region of £300 – £400 and anyone wishing to sponsor this project, please contact me as soon as possible.
